Solar Directory currently catalogues 3,518 active solar companies across 40 European countries. This is a bottom-up count of individually-listed businesses — installers, manufacturers, EPC contractors, distributors, IPPs and specialists — not a top-down market estimate. The number grows as new companies are added and verified.

Germany leads with 662 listed solar companies, followed by Netherlands (438) and Italy (246). See the full country table above.

The dataset spans 13 business categories: rooftop and commercial installers, panel and component manufacturers, EPC project developers, equipment distributors, independent power producers (IPP), and niche specialists including BIPV (building-integrated), agri-PV/BESS (agricultural dual-use plus storage), VIPV (vehicle-integrated) and thin-film PV, alongside R&D, industry associations, media and consulting firms.

Companies are aggregated from public business directories and official company registers, then de-duplicated. Each listing includes a country and, where available, city, website and geo-coordinates (62% of listings are geocoded). Verification is an opt-in programme — a company earns a verified badge after passing a 3-step business-registration, tax-ID and direct-contact check. Most listings start unverified.
